Visual expanse: A full wall of glazing seamlessly connects the bedroom to the lush terrace outside, dissolving the boundary between the interior comfort and nature.

The Patil Residence

A multi-storey family residence in Dehradun, designed on the site of an existing house, with a focus on long-term durability, spatial openness, and contemporary architectural expression.

A Material-Led Urban Residence

The project involved replacing an existing single-storey house with a contemporary multi-level residence tailored to the needs of a large family. The brief required clear separation between formal and informal spaces, along with dedicated areas for leisure and wellness, while maintaining ease of movement and low long-term maintenance. The planning deliberately moves away from the neo-colonial vocabulary common in the region, opting instead for a more restrained and material-driven architectural language.

To improve light and ventilation within a dense built form, the mass was strategically carved to introduce light-wells and double-height spaces. These interventions bring daylight deep into the interior while improving cross-ventilation across levels. Externally, natural sandstone cladding was used in place of applied finishes to ensure durability and reduce maintenance. A limited palette of locally familiar materials — sandstone, brick, and stone flooring — is used consistently across the house, allowing texture, grain, and construction to define the architecture rather than surface treatment.
