Spring Dales Public School
A high-altitude school campus in Mulbekh designed through contemporary rammed-earth construction, rooted in Ladakhi building traditions and adapted for extreme climatic conditions.
Learning Spaces Built from the Land
The SDPS campus was developed in collaboration with Chybik + Kristof Associated Architects, with The Blue Khirki responsible for project management and on-site realization. The architecture draws from traditional Ladakhi building methods while reinterpreting them through modern construction techniques. Insulated structural rammed-earth walls and timber ceilings form the primary building system, providing thermal mass, durability, and a strong connection to local material culture.
Designed for the harsh climate of the region, the buildings are compact, well-insulated, and oriented to maximize daylight and passive solar gain. Thick earth walls regulate indoor temperatures, while deep openings and wooden interiors create calm, warm learning environments. Through careful coordination between design intent and construction execution, the project demonstrates how locally rooted architecture can be delivered at institutional scale with contemporary performance standards.
